Anissa Helou is a London-based food writer concentrating on Middle Eastern, North African and Mediterranean cooking (check out her In The Kitchen With recipe!). She’s truly had an amazing career. Before Anissa was into food, her life was in the art world, and before she lived in this modern, minimalist two-story loft, she was living in a Victorian home full of 19th century objects, paintings and furniture. She moved into this light, airy, spare space 13 years ago, but despite attempts at minimalism her cookbook collection keeps growing! Anissa also blogs about her travels, the people she meets and shares recipes. Her latest endeavor is an Egyptian street food experience in an elegant ‘hole-in-the-wall’ place in Covent Garden with a group of Egyptian foodie entrepreneurs, and she leads the occasional culinary tour. Anissa also works as a consultant for the National Museum of Qatar, helping them develop a food culture program for their Food Forum. Many thanks, Anissa, and Celia Topping for the beautiful photos!

I know that all-white interiors are a bit polarizing — some people find them calming, peaceful or energizing, while others feel oppressed or bored by the lack of color and contrast. I can see both sides of the coin, but there’s just no denying that white brings in the light, and that’s a good thing. This beautiful kitchen makeover in Seattle, created by Portland-based interior designer Casey Keasler, is a great example of how to harness white’s light-gathering properties. Though this redesign includes more industrial elements, lighter wood floors, lovely minimalist wood counters and steel shelving, the open walkway and gleaming white surfaces work together to create a warmer, more welcoming space that could comfortably accommodate a decent-sized gathering of cooks and diners. Nicely done, Casey!

Image above: I have far too many cookbooks and even though I had a huge bookcase built specially for them, they are spilling out on the floor and in the blocked fireplaces. This said, I would have had space for all of them if I had sold my art books (I was in the art world before moving to food). I wanted [the space] to be white but not a boring white so after I tried all kinds of whites I settled on a very nice one that changes with the light which is called blackened white by Farrow & Ball and the white is mixed with very little purple and even less black.

Pink walls, a green ceiling and cupboards painted in deVOL's "Clerkenwell Blue." All kitchen cupboards are still made in Loughborough, Leicester, where the story of deVOL began. The wonderful wooden floors are original and the beautiful chandelier is antique.

Sometimes the best design ideas come in the smallest of packages. And for me, that tiny design wonder is Megan Pflug’s incredible antique sink. She unveiled her mini kitchen makeover earlier this year, but I’ve found myself going back to this one room over and over again for inspiration and ideas. Not only has she inspired me to consider accordion sconces for our kitchen, but she’s made me want to spend hours digging around eBay and other sites to try to find a stunning little sink like this one (paired with that cute checked skirt? perfect). If you need a little makeover inspiration and want to see how her amazing kitchen came together, click here to check it all out online. Until Monday, I hope you all have a wonderful and restful weekend. xo, grace

Autumn, a digital strategist for Leon’s with a background in public relations and interior design, and her partner Bo, carpenter apprentice, took a risk right after college. Their jobs in the small town of Walkerton, Ontario weren’t fulfilling the couple so they saved enough money for a first and last month rental deposit and decided to move to Toronto. “Neither of us had jobs, or job leads. All we had was first and last month’s rent, a stack of resumes, and 30 days to either find jobs and stay, or pack up and go back home,” Autumn shares. They booked a hotel in Toronto and started touring potential apartments. “The first two were duds, so we were crossing our fingers we would like the third option — as we couldn’t afford to stay another night and this was kind of our ‘shot.’ Luckily, we really liked option #3 and without hesitation we signed the papers and moved in two weeks later.” The last-resort apartment turned out to be a great find with a massive backyard.

Eventually deVOL will be opening up the rest of the townhouse to customers, too. Although the upstairs rooms aren’t decorated yet, the showroom team is happy to take visitors up to the roof garden for a look over London. “We have a long way to go with the house but it’s exciting for me, I have a whole East End house to decorate and style, so my head is full of ideas every minute of every day,” Helen shares.
